My Story: Why I Created the Piano Man Approach

You wouldn't know it from hearing me play piano now, but for a very long time, I was completely stuck. Despite years of lessons, I never gained any real capacity to read notes on a staff, and I could feel that even if I did, it wasn't the skill I was looking for to help me play the songs I loved the way I heard them on the radio.

It was beyond frustrating to have this beautiful instrument and powerful desire, but not be able to express myself through it.

Then one night, everything changed. My parents took me to a party where I saw something that transformed my life forever. One of their friends started playing his acoustic guitar, and he clearly didn't read notation or have extensive training. He just knew some chords and strumming patterns.

Yet he was making real music that everyone loved and recognized, and they were all having a blast singing along with him.

That's when it hit me: What if I approached piano like guitar players approach their instrument?

Instead of reading individual notes on a staff, I started working with chord symbols. Instead of rigid, note-by-note playing, I created rhythm patterns that made me sound like a full band. Instead of being restricted to what some arranger dictated on paper, I created simple fills and licks from the chords my hands were already playing.

The difference was immediate and dramatic. Suddenly I was playing songs that sounded authentic - songs people loved, recognized, and could happily sing along with.

That breakthrough became the Piano Man Approach.
