Piano Man Approach for Jazz Standards & Cocktail Music
A New Course That Shows You How to Adapt and Enhance Your Skills for the Great American Songbook
You've probably noticed when you try to play something made famous by Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, or dozens of others, that something feels just a little bit... off. It feels like you're speaking the right language... but not the right dialect.
The good news is, you don't need to start over. You just need to know how to adapt what you already know.
What's In the New Jazz Standards Course?
A series of comprehensive themed masterclasses covering the topics necessary to adapt your core Piano Man Approach skills to sound at home in the world of the Great American Songbook.
This isn't jazz theory for classical musicians. This is YOUR method - the Piano Man Approach - adapted specifically for standards and cocktail music.
Some Things You'll Learn:
- Swing Timing and Accents - How to adapt your rhythm patterns and execution for an authentic smooth swing feel and groove
- Sophisticated Chord Voicings and Substitutions - Taking a hard look at some of the more sophisticated chords we will be encountering (and sometimes subbing in on purpose) that give standards their signature sound
- Jazz Chord Progressions - Understanding some of the common chord progressions that show up often in jazz standards and how they differ from many we often see in post rock popular music
- The American Songbook Style - Taking post rock era popular songs and stylizing them to sound like they came from the Songbook era
- Left Hand Techniques - We'll still use some octaves, but it's time to think outside the octave box
- Melodic Interpretation - How to phrase and express melodies with authentic jazz feel
- Jazz-Style Improvisation - Adapting your chord-based improv techniques for standards
Song Demonstrations Throughout:
Classic standards made famous by Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and more - including "Fly Me to the Moon," "The Way You Look Tonight," "All of Me," "When I Fall in Love," "Paper Moon," "Amore", and many more - plus learn how to transform your favorite songs into cocktail arrangements.
We're Doing This Launch a Little Different
Every time I've launched a course over the years, I get hundreds of emails saying some version of, "I'm excited by this content, but I wish I could have you here to ask questions while I'm just getting started with it." Well, I think I have a way to do this at scale for everyone.
Master Classes
First, rather than string together a bunch of lessons in a sequence that may or may not fit where you are in your skill and experience levels, this course will contain 8 stand alone masterclasses on 8 separate topics vital to playing standards and cocktail music.
These masterclasses will each be 50-75 minutes in length and show both accompaniment and right hand melody application, as well as show simpler entry points for those with less experience, and sophisticated options for those who are ready for it.
Drip Rather than Dump
Furthermore, rather than dump the entire course on you at once, these 8 master classes will drop over a period of 5 weeks...two the first and second weeks, and two the fourth and fifth weeks, with an integration week in the middle to absorb, digest, and practice.
Real Time Attention from Steve
In addition, during week 2 and week 5, I will be conducting special Livestream Question & Answer Sessions exclusively for those who have purchased the course during this launch, and no one else. So, as you work through the new material and have questions pop up, you'll have the chance to ask me about it right away and get the clarity you need to carry on with confidence while the iron is still hot.
These Q&A sessions will then be timestamped with the questions answered and dropped into the curriculum of the course as invaluable bonus material.
Even if you can't attend the Q&As, you'll get to watch them after the fact, and you can submit questions in advance to get answered.
You will receive emails all through the 5 week process with notifications when new material drops, join links and question submission opportunities for the Q&As, and instructions on how to get the most out of the course.
You don't have to take part in any of this during the 5 weeks to still benefit from it...the questions your peers ask will likely be many of the same ones you would ask
Here's the Schedule:
Week 1 (October 27): Masterclasses 1-2 drop
Week 2 (November 3): Masterclasses 3-4 drop
Wednesday, November 5: LIVE Q&A Session #1 with Steve
Week 3 (November 10): Integration Week - No new content, time to practice and absorb
Week 4 (November 17): Masterclasses 5-6 drop
Week 5 (November 24): Masterclasses 7-8 drop
Wednesday, November 26: LIVE Q&A Session #2 with Steve
Your Exclusive Launch Bonuses:
