Bright Lights (Matchbox Twenty) - Song Tutorial Masterclass

Mar 08, 2025

This 2003 tune from Matchbox Twenty was a top 30 hit in the US, and is a great example of what I love most about doing my Sunday livestream concerts.  I'd never heard this before, and never really had given Matchbox Twenty the time of day.  But, I was given this request in the chat feed one week from a regular fan, so I said I would look into it.  I did, and I loved the song...so I learned it using the trusty old Piano Man Approach G.L.I.D.E. son learning formula, and played it the following Sunday.

This song is another great example of my favorite of the 4 "essential feels" that we teach here at the "Piano Man Approach", the "Syncopated Feel"....or as we affectionately named it, the "Heartbeat Feel".  As do most songs, it offers plentiful opportunities to mold the rhythm pattern into a perfect fit for the tune with simple chord based improv modifications.

This song really lends itself well to our favorite building block improvisation maneuvers....toggling and arpeggios.  All in all, this is just a great and satisfying song to play, so....let's dive in!!

Enjoy the masterclass of this song, and check out Matchbox Twenty's great master recording below.

If you'd like to explore my piano method more deeply, my best students use my video courses and join me for conversation and twice monthly Q&A Livestreams in my private community...you can find it all HERE. Thanks.
