Here, There, and Everywhere (Beatles)
Mar 08, 2025So.....before I get into the actual substance of this post, let me say for the record...this will read that it came out on March 8, but for me it feels like March 7. When I started this on February 1, I decided it was important to me to release a new blog daily, and today life didn't cooperate with me to do it earlier, so it's after midnight. But I'm still crediting myself with it as a post for the 7th because I haven't slept yet LOL.
This is one of the most beautiful songs written in popular music history, but certainly from the Beatles impressive catalogue. Paul McCartney struck gold on this one in 1966, trying to write something comparable to the epic "God Only Knows" by Brian Wilson & the Beach Boys. He was at John Lennon's house for a writing session , but John was still asleep, so Paul sat by the pool and had this piece written by the time he woke up.
It was released on the 1966 masterpiece album, "Revolver", which is my second favorite album by the group ("Abbey Road" is my #1 for anyone keeping score). It was never released as a single, but it was such a standout track that it is nearly universally recognized, and has been widely covered. Paul lists it among his personal favorite Beatles tracks, Producer George Martin listed it among his personal favorite McCartney songs, and John Lennon was quoted as saying it was his favorite song from the "Revolver" album.
I had the pleasure of seeing Paul perform this song in person in 2002 with my Dad and sister in Indianapolis, IN. I've always been a total sucker for the song, and there are a few lines of lyric that really speak to me.
"There, running my hand through her hair...."
"I want her everywhere, and if she's beside me I know I need never care..."
I've felt like that before....felt so strongly in love that I just wanted her with me everywhere all the time. Paul didn't even know Linda, his eventual wife, yet, but this song describes the relationship they would have together for 30 years before her tragic and untimely passing in 1998. They did everything together....Paul even taught her some basic piano skills so that she could play keys and sing backing vocals with him on the road, even as she maintained a full career as a celebrity photographer, and they raised 4 kids together who appear to be pretty well adjusted and grounded as adults.
They just always adored each other and didn't want to be apart, and that's what this song is all about. I'm kind of an old silly soul who believes in things like the law of attraction, and I always wonder if by giving such powerful expression to his desire for a relationship like what he had with Linda by writing this tune, if maybe he didn't activate the universe on his behalf to bring him together with her a couple years later.
At any rate, this is a beautiful song with a beautiful sentiment. Do you have anyone in your life that you're so crazy about that you just don't want to be apart from them? It's a special feeling....and this song tells your story.
Enjoy my cover of this song from January 19, 2020, and then check out Paul singing it live in 1993 during his "Off the Ground" tour.
